Benefits of Laser Tube Cutting

With CNC laser tube cutting, we can perform clean, accurate cuts and finishes on tube metal, box sections, channels and angles. Advantages of this technology include:

  • Three-dimensional cutting and marking
  • Multiple operations on one machine reducing secondary operations
  • Cost-effective
  • Good lead times

How Does Laser Tube Cutting Work?

Laser tube cutting (also called tube laser cutting) is exactly what it sounds like – laser cutting a tube or similar three-dimensional shape as opposed to a flat metal sheet.

As with CNC laser cutting, specifications for the size, shape and placement of cuts are entered into the computer. The laser itself works in the same way too, by melting and vaporising the metal being cut.

The difference here is the 3D element – the tube or box is mounted on a rotating bracket, which also moves horizontally to allow the (also moving) laser to cut and mark down the length of the shape.

Our Laser Tube Cutting Machines

Using the Amada Ensis 3015 RI, we are able to switch between cutting flat sheet metal and 3D pipe in as little as 2 minutes – the rotary index is located on a shuttle pallet, making the transition quick and easy. The rotary aspect has the capability to cut cylindrical, square and rectangular pipe as well as channels and angles. Pipe or tubing can now be cut without vibration while maintaining accuracy from end to end.

The tube solution software package we employ provides fully automated off-line programming and nesting for Amada tube lasers. It is directly linked to the 3D modelling system, SheetWorks, for fast switching between CAD and CAM environments.
